Who doesn’t love fried chicken? One of our roommates woke up this morning with a massive hang over.. which isn’t really uncommon in our house. She had a craving for fried chicken and wanted to take us to a place across town called Arnold’s. We thought they delivered and having just woken up and not really in the mood to get ready we were all about fried chicken delivery.
Reviews say that this is one of the best fried chicken joints in Singapore. If you know me, or have known me for more than a few days, you know I have a special love for fried chicken. That being said, this place is going up against Merritt’s Bakery, Southern Kitchen, Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in my head. Which is no small feat, because lets be realistic black folks know how to fry a chicken and soul food is near and dear to my heart.
Back to Arnold’s, right. The place is located on the 2nd floor of a old school mall called City Plaza along Geylang Road. When I say old school, this mall looked like it had seen better days and looked pretty defeated. No where near as modernized as the Orchard district or the Plaza Singapora generation of mega malls. BUT, if there’s one thing I’ve come to know it’s that the best food places aren’t always located in the best areas, so what the hell, we’ll give it a shot.
The first thing we noticed was a line, which is always a good sign. It didn’t look like anyone had trouble finding Arnold’s even if it was in the middle of some crappy mall. They gave us a number and asked to take our order (basically so the food could hit the table as soon as one was ready). This gave us a opportunity to explore a little before our meal. 10 minutes later and a purchase of some hand sanitizer we went back and was seated. The food came out and it was quite good. It’s no Roscoe’s but it’ll do. The closest thing I can compare it to is KFC, you know back when it was Kentucky Fried Chicken. Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and cole slaw, just like the KFC #5.
Don’t get me wrong we polished off the whole tray of food and we silent (again) for a good 15 minutes. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy and moist on the inside, just how it should be. What was missing is the Cornel’s secret spices or Emeril’s BAAAAAAAMMMMM, something extra to kick it up a bit. I’m all for a light batter, but some extra flavor would of been nice. The mashed potatoes and cole slaw were okay, on par with KFC extras. As the kids say “it’s iiiiggghtt” good enough to go back to, until I find something better!
Lines and lines of people can’t be wrong, it’s just not like home.
